Shrek 2, released in the United States on 19 May 2004, is the 2004 sequel to the 2001 computer-animated DreamWorks Pictures film Shrek. In April 2004 the film was selected for competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
Shrek 2 scored the fourth largest three day opening weekend in US history,^[2] as well as the largest opening for an animated movie until 18 May 2007, when it was eclipsed by its sequel Shrek the Third.^[3] As of 2006, it is the 9th highest-grossing film of all time.[4] It went on to be the most successful film in 2004.^[4] The associated soundtrack reached the top ten of the Billboard 200. It is also the seventh highest ticket selling animated film of all time^[5]. It is, as well, the highest-grossing fully-animated movie of all time^[6].

Coming home from their honeymoon, Shrek and Fiona learn they have been invited to Far Far Away for a Royal Ball, during which Shrek will receive a blessing from Fiona's dad, the King, and become part of the royal family. When they arrive, the King and Shrek don't get along. A Fairy Godmother tells the King that her son, Prince Charming, was supposed to marry Fiona, and that the King has to get them together. The King tells Shrek to meet him in the woods the next day.
There, Shrek and Donkey are attacked by Puss in Boots. After they defeat him it is revealed that the King had hired him to kill Shrek. Shrek, Donkey, and Puss go to see the Fairy Godmother. They steal her Happily Ever After Potion, and Shrek and Donkey drink it. The next day Shrek and Fiona become human, and Donkey turns into a stallion. Shrek learns that if he kisses Fiona by midnight both of them will remain human forever.
Meanwhile, back at the castle, Prince Charming approaches Fiona and tells her that the Happily Ever After Potion made her and Shrek human, but he claims that he is Shrek. When Shrek, Puss, and Donkey return to the castle, they confront Charming and the Fairy Godmother at the ball. They defeat the Fairy Godmother, but not before she returns the King to his original form: a frog.
Shrek asks Fiona if she wants to remain human. Fiona says she likes him as an ogre, and Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey return to their original forms. The King finally accepts Shrek for who he is.
